This is an interesting one. Email really isn't used much at all for person-to-person communication anymore... I can't remember the last time I sent someone an email that wasn't related to work or to some service. That's largely (for me, anyway) been replaced by text messages, or instant messaging services like Discord or Matrix. Email is, weirdly, too slow, now.

Interesting.

Unfortunately I can't see it reasonably supporting stuff like presence, plaform bridging, reactions, etc. that are common in IMs.

I have similar thoughts about traditional phone services. I rarely use my phone for anything outside of calling my family. Everyone else I usually keep in contact with via Discord, or in some cases Steam chat. And because the latter is account-based, you can actively control who can or can't contact you, so cold calls aren't an issue.
