I spent a half hour with Chumbus the day before Apollo switched to memorial mode. Time well spent.
Chumbus, Apollo, and the “good old days” will all be missed. But I’m glad I got to use such a great app from such an awesome and engaged dev.
Since many of us are trying to avoid giving reddit any traffic, this space can be used to discuss Apollo, our dreams of seeing it join the Fediverse, and to give our appreciation to @[email protected] for his incredible work.

I love this.
I'm going to out myself here... what is/was Chumbus!
Okay so in the Apollo appearance settings there was a button that said “boop” in the top right. It was there to show off the color of your appearance selection. However, when you hit it, it talks back. Explaining what it’s there for and it shouldn’t be pushed. It gets mad because you keep poking the boop button and after a few hundred clicks it reveals it’s name is Chumbus. You can keep going just tapping away and then Chumbus will give you the Chumbus appearance which is black on black so it makes some things totally black out.
Although I just saw that in one of the special wallpapers there is a face on the side that says Chumbus. You can only see it with the max sized wallpaper. So Chumbus is at least remembered.
It was a button in the theme settings page that would talk to you if you pressed it a certain amount of times, and it eventually gave you a free theme as well
I’m guessing op’s pixelpal?
When you changed themes in Apollo there was a “Boop” button in the top right that when pressed produced popups asking you to stop poking chumbus or something like that. If you pressed it enough it gave you a special theme.
If you shake the iPhone on the app icon selection screen it asks for the “sekrit word”. Does this have anything to do with Chumbus? I tried “boop” to no avail.
