I just assumed it would be Nvidia because they powered the first gen also

Nvidia having a better product is no surprise, it's always been a question of price.

My understanding was that Nvidia had better performance at 4-5w handheld range but AMD had better performance in the 25w+ docked range. Nintendo just decided that handheld performance per watt was more important.
