I grew up listening to 90's alt rock like Nirvana, REM, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. - what more recent bands embody that vibe and feel?

Wolf Alice, King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Buke and Gase, Queens of the Stone Age is still kicking…

Cannot wait for the new QOTSA record. King Gizzard is also a great suggestion - those guys are so prolific. Saw them live for their Infest the Rats' Nest tour and they kicked ass.

I feel like instead of recreating grunge a lot of the kids just rediscovered Nirvana, but I'm interested to see if anyone has found some acts I just haven't heard of.

No, I think that is the Deftones.

There are a number of bands still going. That shocked me because I thought they would be playing their old hits, but some are still pumping out stuff. I should have wrote them all down for moments like this!

Also some of the grungy new bands doing local gigs really have a line on 90s alt rock. Why didn't I make a list?!

Edit: Bands that were still going in 2011: https://www.flavorwire.com/182592/an-alphabetical-list-of-105-90s-alternative-bands-that-still-exist

Not super grungey but definitely alternative, give Band of Skulls a look. Especially the first 3

Muse has a variety of genres of music among their discography. My favourites are earlier on but you may find some vibes in there that are to your liking.

One of my favorite contemporary bands, Finom(formerly Ohmme), might give you the vibe you're looking for. Top notch songwriting! Laden with influences ranging from Arto Lindsay to The White Stripes throughout.

Gotta check out Big Wreck. They're on tour now.

Built to spill Modest mouse

I wouldn't say these are any newer than the 90s bands in the OP but they are definitely less well known and awesome.

They both had new album releases the the last year or so Otherwise, I've heard king gizzard is good

Oh wow I knew modest mouse was still active, didn't know built to spill was still around! I was actually just listening to the plan last night, I'm gonna need to check out their new album.

Not much to do with the bands you've mentioned, but I am quite fond of "Dance with the Dead" lately.

Fever333 has a RATM thing going on that you might like. I got into some of the stoner/doom stuff out of my love for Soundgarden, there's plenty to find if you like that Sabbath-y heavy riff sound. Some of the old alt bands are still kicking: Obv Pearl Jam is still doing it, and they still cut a great album, The Pixies, QOTSA, Afghan Whigs, Built to Spill, Weezer, all released good albums in the last few years. You might also like some stuff that hits some alt rock feelings like Blancmange, The Rentals, Wunderhorse, Paolo Nutini, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Wet Leg, Ty Segall.

Some of the bands and solo artist spin offs of the big rock acts in the early 2000s have continued to write killer tunes - Tom Morello, Jack White, Black Keys, Son Volt, Night Beats.

Maybe that's enough of a start?
