Does anyone know how the dev did the installing functionality of the webapp? Anything you can link me to with more info on the subject?

It's called PWA - Progressive Web Apps, basically web apps as apps. Been around as a concept for a while and hasn't really caught on, but is useful for making offline versions of WebApps or easily updatable clients like wefwef.

Another notable one I can think of is xbox cloud streaming.

Apple won’t let them on the App Store so they made one of these.
