Hello there. I'm a beginner so keep that in mind. I have an old laptop (something like 10 yo). It has an HDD, 4 gigs of DDR3, an i3 4th gen 1.7 GHz and an NVidia Geforce 710M (Windows Game Ready Driver 391.35 WHQL which I think doesn't support Wayland). It also has CSM BIOS so yeah. It has the option of UEFI but the GeForce (I think) doesn't support it.

Currently, it has Windows 10 on it, but it has been veeeeery sluggish. I'm planning to upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs and upgrade to an SSD, but (even if I upgrade those parts) I don't want to use Windows anymore, at all.

So, I have a few options. (kinda in order)

  1. Linux Mint
  2. Fedora, though idk if the 2 GHz requirement is a big problem
  3. Pop!_OS
  4. MX Linux
  5. Debian
  6. Ubuntu and its flavors
  7. Zorin OS

and maybe Solus? though the same problem with fedora.

Yeah yeah ik, all of these except Fedora and Solus are Debian/Ubuntu based.

DE options: (again, also kinda in order)

  1. KDE Plasma (love the looks of it, though is my hardware enough?)
  2. Cinnamon
  3. XFCE - LXDE - LXQT (because of "lightweightness" :D)
  4. Budgie
    ~~5. GNOME~~ too heavy

These are some options for me. If you have any more suggestions, let me know. Also, are there any compatibility issues with my system for the distros/DEs?

Thanks for the replies in advance.

(Note: this was also posted in the c/[email protected] and the r/linux4noobs subreddit. don't ask why im still on reddit, it's because of Infinity for reddit.)

There are a number of things that Linux Mint objectively does better than Windows 11, and in this video I’m going to show you what those things are.

I like to use OpenRGB to monitor operating temperature. The CPU fan reads the CPU temp, the window in front of my graphics card reads the GPU temp, and, for now, I have my keyboard reading the NVMe temp (just recently installed the NVMe). My mouse color is set by Piper/libratbag so I know what preset I'm using.

Hey-o! I'm a linux user and am thinking of picking up a laptop so that I can work on the couch or travel with it instead of being tethered to my desktop all of the time.

Pretty much will be using it for web browsing, writing, some programming, and video watching. No video games, nothing too intense.

Looking for something reasonably priced, long battery life, good build quality, not too heavy, and 14" or less screen size.

Any recommendations? In the U.S and not looking to pay $500 or more.

Today I want to discuss in detail our plans for icon theming in Plasma 6. It will be rather technical, but may be of interest if you’re a user, developer, or theme author who wants to know...

Nix package manager (nix-tutorial.gitlabpages.inria.fr)

It's been a month or two since I (re) discovered the nix package manager (and operating system).

It got me down a rabbit hole for a few weeks, before things finally settled down.

I loved that I could declare the software I wanted installed on any distro (I have machines with Ubuntu, Arch, Nixos atm). I use home-manager and the same home manager config across machines using chezmoi, so that way all cool command line tools (I'm using distro packages/flatpak for graphical for now) are installed painlessly everywhere.

Big shout-out to nix!

Distro: EndeavourOS
Completely updated. Everything worked fine until yesterday.
No hardware changes (idk why says the graphic card is not compatible, is a Nvidia RTX 3060)

KeepassXC refuses to run

if I click the icon it does nothing, if I try to run it through the console I get this error

qt.glx: qglx_findConfig: Failed to finding matching FBConfig for QSurfaceFormat(version 2.0, options QFlagsQSurfaceFormat::FormatOption(), depthBufferSize -1, redBufferSize 1, greenBufferSize 1, blueBufferSize 1, alphaBufferSize -1, stencilBufferSize -1, samples -1, swapBehavior QSurfaceFormat::SingleBuffer, swapInterval 1, colorSpace QSurfaceFormat::DefaultColorSpace, profile QSurfaceFormat::NoProfile)

Could not initialize GLX

Steam runs, but only minimized on the system tray, it refuses to open a window (I have no errors in a console, yet it does not work properly)

Blender also refuses to work, similarly to keepassXC, clicking the icon does nothing, on the console I got this

Error! GLX_ARB_create_context not available.

After a few conversations with people on Lemmy and other places it became clear to me that most aren't aware of what it can do and how much more robust it is compared to the usual "jankiness" we're used to.

In this article I highlight less known features and give out a few practice examples on how to leverage Systemd to remove tons of redundant packages and processes.

And yes, Systemd does containers. :)
