MODERATOR OF

...And WTF events related to Karma led me to come back here, because Lemmy really surpasses Reddit on all points (even if it cruelly lacks users compared to Reddit).

On some subreddits, we ask to have a Karma in comments good enough on all Reddit to be able to publish one on the community in question (it happened to me on /r/iOSBeta). I don’t know you but these communities shouldn’t get involved in what I do on other Reddit communities, it doesn’t make sense.

Another problem is users who feel superior to others because they have a better Karma. There was a discussion on r/privacy that talked about alternatives to Fire Stick and Chromecast, and one guy had proposed Apple TV, another had replied that Apple was worse than Google and Amazon when it comes to data collection. So to this guy I told him that he would have to be a little clearer by giving evidence. And there, he answers me « You’re a fresh 0-Karma account, you bring proof ».

Well, that’s what Reddit is for me. A huge social game where only Karma allows you to express yourself freely. It reminds me of the episode of Black Mirror where everyone has social points.

In short, I stay on Lemmy.

I wanted to know what you think of Apple news in recent weeks / months.

  • Do you have a positive opinion on future Apple Intelligence?
  • Do you find it normal for the EU to have new features that the USA and others do not have, and vice versa (iPhone Mirorring disabled in Europe in the latest macOS Beta updates, Apple Intelligence deployment canceled on this continent, etc...).
  • Are the new features in operating systems up to your expectations?
  • Let's talk about gaming! Apple is making great partnerships with Ubisoft for example. Can we imagine a new era of gaming on Mac?

Maybe Paint.ly or Pixel Art - Coloring would be good for you. I’ll go with Pixel Art.

Hello, sorry for being inactive for a long time I was in a very busy period in exams!

Today I would like to introduce you to an incredible application: Yattee. It simply allows you to watch YouTube without ads, without sponsored messages, with an interface based on Swift for an Apple native experience.

Combined with an application like Redirect Web for Safari (https://apps.apple.com/en/app/redirect-web-for-safari/id1571283503), you can redirect all YouTube links to Yattee!

The best part is that it is available on the App Store for free. The magic comes from the fact that the application does not go through YouTube directly but through an instance based on Invidious or Piped.

I put the download link here for those who are interested: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1595136629

To watch videos, when starting the application, go to the settings at the top left, click on Instances, then Add an instance, give the name you like (ex: Amazing Instance) and choose a link from these two lists:

Choose what you prefer between Piped and Invidious. I took the instance https://invidious.reallyaweso.me because it is based in a country close to mine and Invidious is known to be stable.

On the instance you have chosen, you can also create an account on which your subscriptions and playlists will be synchronized. So if like me you only use a Google account for YouTube, you can get rid of it. The only thing you won’t be able to do anymore is write comments and publish videos.

What do you think are the BEST extensions for Safari? Or do you use another browser? Here are mine that I am currently testing:

  • Wipr / Adguard (while Adguard is complete, it is very energy-hungry. On the Wipr side, it blocks all ads but lacks Cookie windows for example)

  • Unsmartifier (to block App store ads on certain web pages)

  • Redirect Web for Safari (the app seems to be great but doesn’t work, surely because I use the beta version of iOS 18, there I can’t be sure)

  • Qwant for Safari (I like this search engine and it recently got an update integrating an AI response to Google)

And you, what do you use?

I would also like both but I mean, there are so many articles of the Zippy Bot that appear every hour that we can only see the up votes. And not only I would like users to bring the articles themselves (this would solve the problem of impertinence of the articles) but in addition it would increase quality rather than quantity (sawing once again that several articles are repeated). So like you I prefer both but I would like members not to take this community for an RSS client. I hope I expressed myself well 😅

If it can reduce the number of posts made by the robot by limiting it to a single source, that would be good. I’m looking at how to filter irrelevant posts from Mac Rumors. Thank you for your suggestion.

Hello!

As you would have noticed, there are some changes that have occurred this week in the community: new moderator, new look, but especially the temporary deactivation of the Zippy Bot, which often shared posts that were not relevant and did not encourage so much exchange between users.

So I wanted to know your opinion, collect your ideas in order to improve the community. Thank you to everyone who joins!

I want to apply to be a moderator!

The question was quickly answered 😅

I was thinking about Nothing Phone 2. Does the brand give off a good image in terms of privacy?

Good morning! I hope this community is not dead 😵

I was objectively wondering if it was advantageous to switch from a Nothing Phone 2 or 2a (which one is already the best?) Since an iPhone 13.

That’s it. Otherwise, do you prefer Nothing or Apple?

Wow, this is the most complete answer I have ever seen. But is it wrong if I stay at Apple? Are there any competitors on the Android side that are worth it (I am thinking in particular of a pixel on which GrapheneOS is installed)?

I am looking for an alternative to bird.makeup (Because it doesn't work anymore) that allows me to follow Twitter accounts on Mastodon. I saw on GitHub there was a tool called Touitomamout (https://github.com/louisgrasset/touitomamout) which is up to date and apparently does the job well but I don't know much about Docker. Is there an instant solution for me to follow Elon Musk on Mastodon 😆.

I'm curious to know what Proton VPN's ad blocker offers, but I don't see any videos or articles showing how it works. So I am addressing VPN users, because there is no free trial unfortunately to try it:

  • Does it block Cookie's banners?
  • Is it necessary for the VPN to be constantly activated to benefit from the block?
  • Is it better than uBlock-Origin?
  • When is the page loading speed consistent?
  • On iPhone, does the battery take a hit?

No one talks about this feature even though it is highlighted by Proton themselves (https://protonvpn.com/en/features/adblocker).

This week, Apple released in the latest update of iOS and MacOS an application that is simply called "Passwords".

In my opinion, Apple could be a serious competitor to Pass: both provide temporary emails, both manage Passkeys, but what I think sets Apple apart from Proton is the "Connect with Apple" feature. Passwords are also encrypted (for Apple via the default iCloud Keychain).

Of course, Proton does not have the same financial income as Apple, which pushes them, for example, to ask to pay for two-factor authentication. But I stay with Proton because I simply love the values of the company but also because I have my emails, my calendar, my drive that are on Proton.

Now I think it would be interesting for Proton to work on an alternative to "Connect with Google" or "Connect with Apple". What do you think?

I’m not going to make a big paragraph to explain myself but here are the positive points:

  • No advertising
  • Diversified applications
  • Very good freedom of expression
  • Fedivers
  • Verification (using a website)

Now negative points:

  1. I was sold instances that served as a mirror with X which would have facilitated integration into Mastodon for users like me. Only 2% of the accounts I follow on X are on Mastodon (Mozilla, Proton).

  2. There are not really « fun » accounts like https://x.com/humansnocontext that post funny video clips, I find Mastodon a little too serious, I see a lot of political accounts and sometimes the lives of normal people like mine. It’s a shame 😕. I mean, I chose Lemmy because it’s so much more diverse!

  3. You cannot change your username. It’s a shame about that...

Well, that was my opinion on Mastodon.

If you have recommendations, favorites of Mastodon accounts, share them with me.
