We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

Now with Black Friday coming around the corner and hopefully some nice deals will pop up. I wanted to upgrade my old setup with something new. When lurking this reddit i saw alot of people going the way by using a NUC for all there server related solutions. So i'm looking for some advice to go down the road of using an NUC for plex and other media related apps as server.

Also which DAS would all of you recommend. Right now i had the following hardware on the eye.

SABRENT 10 Bay USB C SSD HDD 3.5 Inch Docking Station, Hard Drive Enclosure, USB 3.2 Gen2 Offline Cloning Station with Two 120 mm Fans for Additional Cooling + Power Supply, Tool-free (DS-UCTB)
Intel NUC 13 Pro Kit RNUC13ANHI50002
Kingston DDR4 SODIMM Fury Impact 2x16GB 3200
Samsung 990 PRO 2TB M.2 SSD

I was thinking of the following NUC because of the better airflow, or is it no use to concern about heat or performance issues.

I strongly advice against that DAS. I have an identical(?) 10 bay ICY BOX DAS. IB-3810U3.

It works perfectly fine, but is flimsy and noisy.

On the other hand, the 5 bay enclosure, IB-3805-C31, is great! Solid, robust and silent. Especially compared to the 10 bay enclosure. I assume the 5 bay Sabrent enclosure is the same.

I can have the 5 bay enclosure turned on, with idle Exos drives, in the bedroom and sleep fine. Not so with the 10 bay enclosure.

IB-3810U3

Already have this DAS but i have no succes to have it working on USB3.0

I will everytime get random i/o errors even on different devices, when using USB2.0 i dont have any problems. That's why im looking out for something else

I’ve used 4 bay Mediasonic Probox or Proraid units with great success in the past.
