Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

So, I would have a question about whether there is any security risk if the size of a data storage does not fit into the binary system. It might be just an urban legend, but some have raised concerns that it's better to buy 2-4-8 TB data storage, avoiding sizes like 5 or 3 TB as they could be unstable. Perhaps some operating systems have difficulty interpreting them. Is there any basis for this? In this case, would it really be a better decision to choose a 4 TB hard drive?
