Saw this thread and though "why does he call himself Morpheus if he doesn't like the movie?" But it's not about that, is it?

I love the idea of Matrix, but I'm so done with Element on my phone telling me it is "Syncing..." for two minutes, only to end up with 1 new message in 1 channel... 😅
Boy oh boy i used schildichat as i heard someone suggesting it and it was on fdroid without any anti features and it..... sucked
the element x version has been working much better for me wrt sync speed. still in beta and missing some features but overall very nice
Still no threads, right?
no but I personally don't use threads, and sliding sync is really nice. won't work for all yet. here's a more complete feature list https://github.com/element-hq/element-meta/issues/1915
You are not alone. It's very clunky, and empty. And I find the UI (to clarify, I use Element) unintuitive. Hopefully it picks up. It's a great idea. But the implementation seems to need some work.
i kinda hate it. rough is an understatement
Preach brother . On that note have you tried IRC and would you rec ?
haha, ive been usin irc for prolly 35 years, but not much lately. discord kinda embraced, and extinguished a ton of irc groups.
i would always highly recommend irc. my first game bots/instant messenger relays were all irc.
that said, my kids needs for multimedia bells and whistles won out in the end.
Any good server for a noob to join ? i would like to be able to give the least bit of info as i have a habit of bolting from places
An IRC server runs many, many different channels, you can create a new channel by simply joining an empty channel.
I would recommnd googling a subject you are interested in and adding IRC to the search and see where that takes you.
The best IRC channels I have been in was smaller channels for smaller communities.
I remember when our computer class in trade school set up our own IRC channel back in 2006-2009, it was brilliantly fun.
I'd suggest connecting to one of the larger networks, back when I was active on IRC, I first started with QuakeNet, then slowly started getting on other networks like Freenode and Chat4All. The networks have very limited impact on what kind of channels they serve.
Depends on what you expect and what you want to use. Some features are definitely hit or miss, others are great. Others are great in theory, but not yet properly implemented.
I migrated my family and friends instant messaging there years ago. Back then the e2e was bulky ( no cross signing) and but voice and video was slow and unreliable.
All those got fixed, and now it's very convenient to use. And it definitely is unbeatable in terms of transparent security.
The community features and "talk to randoms" aspect I never really explored, so can't say much about that. Never had a need for it. Old reddit or Lemmy serves that itch better for me.
All the other fediverse developers and instance admins are using it, so I am too. If it wasn't for that I'd drop it immediately.
I mean, you're not wrong, but I don't think that makes it suck.
