Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

Buying a hard drive from Amazon with 5 Years warranty (alien.top)

Hi guys,

I'm building my first NAS and I was looking for HDD options. I was looking for buying a used HDD from eBay but I read some posts here recommending avoiding that.

I did some research on Amazon and I have found some interesting offers like this one here

A 4TB HDD from HGST with a 5 Years of warranty, is it a good deal to go with?

The warranty is only as good as the company offering it. In this case it would be offered by the seller, Evrymm, which sounds like one of those generic Chinese spam selling accounts. You may actually get the disk, but I wouldn't count on getting a replacement under any kind of warranty except for the 90 day Amazon one.
